ATVs have a high centre of gravity and so can easily tip over, especially when turning sharply or traversing uneven terrain. Operating on steep slopes, loose gravel, or other unstable surfaces increases the risk of rollovers.

Colliding with trees, rocks, or other obstacles can cause severe injuries: most ATVs do not have seat belts, increasing the risk of being ejected in a crash or rollover. Inexperienced operators may not have the skills to handle the ATV safely.
