Would You Call Cut?
The Scenario
A camera operator is due to start another demanding filming day after finishing late the previous evening. A last-minute schedule change has reduced their rest period to just five hours. They're expected to operate a heavy camera rig throughout the day.
The operator says they're tired but doesn't want to let the team down. Production is reluctant to delay the shoot.
What's your call?
Best answer: CALL CUT
Insufficient rest and fatigue can impair concentration, coordination and judgement, particularly during physically demanding or safety-critical activities.
Someone's willingness to work doesn't establish that they're fit to do so. The combination of very limited rest, reported tiredness and demanding camera operation warrants intervention before the task begins.
Production should review the schedule and arrange appropriate rest, alternative staffing or a less demanding assignment, with competent input where needed.
Takeaway: Fitness to work isn't simply about willingness. Fatigue can compromise safety even when someone insists they can manage.
Make the call!
Or you could just roll VT… but where’s the challenge in that? [02:31]
